After a relatively short sleep (about 5-6 hours) we arose to our first full day in Calgary. Our first visit was to the nearby 'mall' which was 'two blocks' from the hotel (this was also our first day of trying to a accustom ourselves to the lingo).
Breakfast (lunch) was a jacket potato from Arby's for Becky and a BBQ pulled pork sandwich from subway for Jamie. The top floor of the mall had a large garden and ponds, so we had a quick walk around there before heading out to properly explore the city.
We headed up to the Bow River, just a short walk from the hotel on the outskirts of downtown Calgary. We quickly realised how warm it gets in the afternoons and had to abort our walk to head back to the mall to buy Becky some shorts! After a successful shopping trip we headed back to the river and around Prince's Island, a large park. We walked down the river, through the rain and thunder, watching the numerous squirrels (which are black and brown over here!), before finding ourselves heading back into the city.
Next, we spotted the Calgary Tower and headed up to the top to get an aerial view of the city. The tower also had a glass-floored area. After chickening out of the similar floor on Blackpool Tower many years ago, we decided to be brave and edge our way onto it (very briefly!).
Finally we went for food at a nearby restaurant. Jamie had a peppered steak and Becky went for Fish and 'Fries'. We also sampled our first Canadian lager; a local honey beer.
Still a little jetlagged, we returned to the hotel and called it a day.
